Kevin Larragy

When did you start with The Arc Greater Hudson Valley?

September 2014

How has your career grown since starting with our agency?

I started as the Director of Residential for Orange County, six years ago - over the years since joining the organization I have had the opportunity to take on the Assistant Executive Director role, and most recently, the Associate Executive Director role in 2016.

What was the moment you knew you'd made the right decision to work here?

During my interview – I had the chance to be interviewed by a group of people supported who shared their hopes, priorities, and desires. After that, meeting with staff and supervisors and seeing firsthand how deeply people cared about the organization’s mission, and how eager they were to make sure people supported have the opportunities in life that they want, and the supports they need to achieve them was confirmation of what I had seen during my interview.

What are the benefits of working for The Arc Greater Hudson Valley?

You get the opportunity to work with some amazing people, those receiving supports and those you work with. Every day brings new challenges, regardless of your role. Life is varied, and our job is to support people to live their chosen life…that variety never stops. Some days the work is hard, emotionally and physically, but seeing firsthand how the work we do empowers people we support to achieve the outcomes most important to them is definitely one of the greatest pleasures of working with the Arc.

What are you most proud of?

The growth I have seen in the people we support, whether it is someone getting their first job, taking the first steps to moving into their own apartment, or making the decision to try something new and exciting like moving from a site based program to a community based program.

When did you start with The Arc Greater Hudson Valley?

I was hired in March 0f 1991 as a Relief Instructor in Day Treatment.  I was a college student and would work for the organization when I was home for breaks.

How has your career grown since starting with our agency?

I have climbed the proverbial career ladder while working for The Arc Greater Hudson Valley.  In January of 1994, upon graduation from college, I was hired into a full time position of Assistant Program Coordinator and then promoted to Program Coordinator in Day Treatment.  I applied for the Assistant Director of the Bennett Residence, our Intermediate Care Facility, and was offered the position.  When the Director resigned, I was promoted to Director of the Bennett Residence and I transitioned 40 people from the intermediate care facility to community based homes.  In 1999, a few months after closing the Bennett Residence, I took on the role of Director of Human Resources and then moved into my current role as the Associate Executive Director.

What was the moment you knew you'd made the right decision to work here?

I can’t think of one single defining moment; it’s rather been more of a feeling of ongoing satisfaction and comfort that this is the best place for me to be.

What are the benefits of working for The Arc Greater Hudson Valley?

The benefits of working for The Arc Greater Hudson Valley are the competitive benefit package, the variety of positions that offer flexibility in hours, organization sponsored events for staff and people supported and a family like atmosphere.

What are you most proud of?

A little over 15 years ago the organization began to plan strategically for its future.  Part of that planning involved developing a mission and core values.  To this day, I am extremely proud of the fact that we are an organization driven by mission and values.  All of our decisions derive from a place of staying true to those principles.

Tiffany Skow, Program Manager Residential

When did you start with The Arc Greater Hudson Valley?

I started September 2012 as a Relief DSP.

How has your career grown since starting with our agency?

My career has grown more than I thought it would with the Agency over the last 8 years. I started as a relief dsp in September of 2012 because I was new to the field and wasn’t sure at that time what location or hours I would be interested in. By January 2013 I decided to take on a full time evening position at one of the IRA’s that I worked a lot of relief hours in. After about 3 years at the same IRA, I decided I needed a change and more money and applied for a Job Coach position. I loved being a job coach, but I missed being in the residential setting and after 6 months, I decided to go back to residential and applied for an APM position for one of the IRA’s, I got the position! I was an APM for about a year when an opportunity for me to apply to become a program manager became available. I took a leap of faith in myself and applied, and I got it!

What was the moment you knew you'd made the right decision to work here?

To pick one moment is the hardest question you could ask me…there have been so many moments throughout my career that reminded me why I ended up working in this field. But because I have to pick THE moment., THE moment I knew I was meant to be here:

The IRA that I worked in for 3 years I became extremely close with one of the people I supported. She unfortunately passed away in May of 2018, she was nonverbal other than her few choice words of things that made her happy, like her “pa- pa’s” (purses) “My man” (tall, dark and handsome men), “Car” (when she saw me because I took her on outings weekly) One evening I decided to take her to Middletown for shopping and dinner. We had a great time together that day. We were sitting at Ruby Tuesday’s eating dinner and a woman approached us, she asked if she was my Grandmother, I smiled and said no. She was amazed when I answered no, she said the way I looked at her, spoke to her, and interacted with her, it was sweet to watch and walked away smiling, amazed that I only worked with this woman. Little did I know, an administrator for the Agency was sitting at a table nearby and witnessed our dining experience and the conversation that just took place. As a DSP just doing my job, I was recognized the following day by my Program Director and Program manager for my work ethic. That moment, made me feel like I was meant to be here.

What are the benefits of working for The Arc Greater Hudson Valley?

There are a lot of benefits of working in this Agency, some of the benefits I appreciate the most are, paid time off, vacations and trip you get to take the people we support on, relationships you build with the people we support and the countless memories you will make.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of how far I have come, not just personally but professionally. If you would have asked me 8 years ago where I saw myself in the next 10 years, I would have told you some unrealistic dream. I am proud that the choice I made in this field, has made me proud of myself for all the support, and dedication I give to others, every day, and how selfless this field has made me, in the most positive way!
